Sie ist am 13. Mai 1981 in Sarnia, einer Stadt in Ontario, Kanada, geboren. Ihr Vater ist in Tibet geboren und in Neu-Delhi aufgewachsen und ihre Mutter stammt aus einer Kleinstadt namens Nahan in Himachal Pradesh. 1996 zog ihre Familie nach Kalifornien. Nach dem Abitur 1999 begann sie sofort mit dem Aktmodeln und Fotografieren. Danach begann sie, in Zeitschriften und Websites mit pornografischen Inhalten zu erscheinen. Schließlich posierte sie 2001 für das Penthouse-Magazin als Penthouse des März und erschien auch in Hustlers Holiday 2001-Ausgabe. Aufgrund ihrer wachsenden Popularität gewann sie 2003 sogar den Titel Penhouse Pet des Jahres. Heutzutage drehte sie hauptsächlich erotische Lesben- und Solofilme.
Schließlich unterzeichnete sie einen Exklusivvertrag mit Vivid Entertainment, wo sie auch begann, Hardcore-Videos von sich selbst zu drehen. Zunächst filmte sie nur mit Schauspielerinnen. 2004 war sie eine der „No More Bush Girls“, die sich aus Protest gegen George W. Bush beweisen. Sunny Leone wurde im Juni 2006 amerikanische Staatsbürgerin.
Ihr Film „Sunny and Cher“ kam im Oktober 2006 heraus und ihr nächster Titel „The Female Gardener“ im Januar 2007. Sunny Leone verlängerte 2007 ihren Vertrag mit Vivid Entertainment, ab jetzt muss sie auch mit Männern shooten. Ihr erster Film mit einem männlichen Hauptdarsteller hieß „Sunny Loves Matt“ und wurde am 2. März 2008 veröffentlicht. Viele weitere Filme folgten, wie „Debbie Does Dallas … Again“ oder „It’s Sunny in Brazil“. Sie belegte Platz 13 auf dem „Porn’s Hot 100 Ranking“.
